Hellion Bullpup Rifle at the Range

I worked with the Hellion rifle at a friend’s range. We filled up the supplied Magpul PMAG 30 first with PMC 55-grain ammunition, reserving some Winchester “White Box” 55-grain ammo for the following round of testing. The first thing I noticed was how quickly the magazine entered and secured in place.

It was a considerable improvement over an AR mag system. Inserting it in firmly did not need a smash. The ambidextrous charging handle ran the bolt back as smooth as silk. The only operational difficulty I experienced was having to modify my grip to use the safety lever. However, my buddy has bigger hands and had no trouble.

The Hellion is one smooth-shooting bullpup rifle. The gas piston working method has none of the abruptness of the AR’s direct impingement system. We fired in a standing stance around 75 feet from the target. The Aimpoint was sighted a touch to the left for both, but the three-shot groups fell in beautiful 2-inch clusters from a standing posture.

Rapid-fire ringing of the steel silhouette was a blast with the Winchester White Box ammunition. There were no faults of any type. The Hellions 1×7 barrel twist rate will shine with bullets of 62 grains and higher in weight. And it should exceed an AR in accuracy because the barrel is not part of an upper receiver that pivots on a hinge pin and locks in place with a captive locking pin. It keeps the Hellion’s barrel rock-solidly in place. Recoil is a mild nudge owing to the low-bore axis.

Hellion Operations and Features

The Hellion employs a short-stroke piston working mechanism that is two-position adjustable. Its ambidextrous non-reciprocating charging handle is positioned above the upper receiver — below the top rail carry handle — and is readily accessible and operated.

The ambidextrous fire-control system is similar of the HK weapons systems and positioned right above the BCM GUNFIGHTER Mod 3 grip. Safe is denoted as a white bullet outline with a “X” in the centre, whereas Fire is represented by a single red bullet outline.

Aft of the pistol grip is the magazine well. The magazine release paddle is positioned at the back of the well. At the back is a five-position polymer stock with cheek riser. An ambidextrous release latch is positioned at the back of the stock.

To operate the two-piece bolt release, squeeze the sliding section to a fixed stop with the thumb and index finger. The bolt release doesn’t lock the bolt back. Inserting an empty magazine first is essential to lock the action open for disassembly.

A frequent criticism among bullpup shooters is of the design’s typically awful trigger pull caused by the lengthy drawbar. The developers at HS have surmounted this and developed a trigger pull that is the greatest I’ve encountered on a bullpup design as well as many regular military rifles. The Hellion provides shooters a 16-inch barrel while keeping the overall length less than that of an M4 carbine. The outcome is full M4 carbine levels of 5.56mm power. To rectify this, the Hellion design allows for moving the ejection port function to the left side. With the Hellion partly disassembled, swapping ejection ports involves relocating the bolt carrier group per instructions for right or left side ejection, then shifting the port cover locking pin from the left side to the right to maintain the right cover secured.
