New York City was the epicenter of the weapons industry in 1870. After coming from Germany in 1850, Louis Daniel Nimschke established his own engraving business there. His contemporaries admired his work much.
The vast majority of the estimated 5,000 tasks were performed for affluent collectors, merchants, or gunsmiths, rather than for weapons manufacturers. Nimschke is most known for his strong American style scrolls, but he was as adept with subtle and delicate English scrolls. Many of Nimschke’s works were signed, unlike those of his contemporaries. L.D. Nimschke is without a doubt one of America’s best engravers. This Colt pistol honors his style and contribution to the American engraving art.
The contemporary Nimschke Series 70 Colt.45 features some of his favorite themes and designs, like interwoven scrolls and symmetry that span the whole slide and are repeated on the frame and unique walnut grips. The artist’s initials may be seen on the slide top, just ahead of the rear sight, as they are on many of his highly embellished works.
The slide is brush polished and deep laser etched with Nimschke designs on both sides and top. Selective gold plate may be seen on the sliding top and the back panel.
